Jotul F500 Oslo damper control problem
Wonderful stove. I had installed this stove in my 1800 sq ft cathedral ceiling cape cod house in 2003. Been using as my primary heat. I burn between 3 to 4 cords of hard wood per season. Burns 24 hrs. I open side door and ash door together to empty ashes . Glass stays clean if you burn dry wood. Clean double walled pipe which is a good 24-26 ft long twice per season. Top cap is the reason I clean twice. It gets 75% blocked with crystallized ash mid season.
The only problem I had was just the other night. I usually snooze on sofa on purpose to wake up around 11 pm to load stove for the night. I opened damper all the way , opened side door as usual, loaded her up, burn pretty good for 15 min., then went to dampen down. No resistance in dampen leaver. Not good! Dampen plate that is moved by knob on outside went and jumped out of place. I service this area every year before start of season and noticed that if you move dampen leaver to fast, the leaver can jump out of the two little tits that stick up of the plate that controls draft. Fire got to hot, out of control. NOT A GOOD THING. Had to grab large ash bucket(small metal trash can with lid) and had to empty burning logs from stove. Got stove empty down to some hot coals and was able to remove the draft cover on inside through access of front door. Very hot job. ov glove came in handy let me tell you. Put back together. Loaded stove back up and was back in business . Needless to say , I didn't sleep good that night. House full of smoke, detectors going off like crazy... Everyone got up out of bed. That was a good thing.
I called stove company and there is a replacement kit for this problem. They make no admittion to a problem. Soon I will receive kit and install. Wear and tear I suppose. Keep an eye on this situation , it gets ugly if you don't .
Thanks for reading, I hope you never have unload your stove while it is a Lion.
